I remember with joy getting into Adobe After Effects for directing and executing motion design pieces for a wide range of clients both in Peru and Canada including boutiques, studios and individual clients.
One of the best business partnerships I had was Perrito Pituco, a well-established peruvian boutique that sells luxurious accessories for pets. Its unique out-of-the-box designs, catalog and marketing strategy helped them build their way up as one of the most recognizable brands in the peruvian market. I happily helped them in their first stage of product placement, when they were still a fresh start-up.
Designing a style and editing videos for social media ads are always a challenge because:
- Different departments (Editorial, Production, Marketing) may have different opinions for the brand strategy
- Working without a clear brief feels like walking in circles and wondering why I don't get to the finish line.
As a designer, I had to speak with briefs, concepts, and possibly mockups. Back then, it was a very manual work, but super valid as it helps to clearly state an idea.
If each of my designs express a single, clear idea, then I'm winning. A good design is like visiting a local community that is proud of its identity. Anywhere you go, you can breathe the essence of it: when talking to the people, the layout of its town, the colors, the food, etc. So does design with typography, color schemes, figures, shapes, etc. Super important especially during this day and age of hyperinformation.
Hopping on 3D
I like to think that I've trained my eyes as a visual designer for 3D spaces, and that's why I got into this industry. Although I don't do much worldbuilding nowadays, I've spent some time creating terrains, biomes, man-made hero assets and camera movements to insert a bit of narrative to my artwork. Some useful softwares here were: Unreal Engine 5, Nuke, Houdini, Blender, PSD and Adobe Premiere/After Effects.
The following piece I made it around 2021, and I like it as it captures the essence of what I look for: a dynamic piece where all elements are tied to my workout motivational message. For this one, I used:
- Maya (hero asset creation)
- Nuke (CGI into live plate)
- Adobe After Effects (Motion Graphics)
- Adobe Premiere (Editing / Post-production)
There's another piece I always go back with joy, and that's a Fan Art Animation I did around 2020. I grabbed a bunch of licensed (lol) videogame
Age Of Empires images and slapped them into a video editing timeline mixing motion graphics, sound effects and 3D assets. The result: The videogame community gave me a huge hats-off highlight at their website, including the curation of a senior designer working for Microsoft team. Oh man, that really meant (and still does) mean something to me. More on the breakdown
here.
